Prerequisites: class includes both under- and upper-class students and can expect daily vocabulary quizzes and daily homework assignments requiring about 30 minutes. Students with less than a C average in English are discouraged from taking this course.
Basic Latin grammar and stylistic analysis is introduced along with simple Latin readings. Side benefits of Latin I are a knowledge of the basic structure of many Western languages, strengthening of grammar skills in English, and vocabulary and spelling improvement in English through the study of Latin roots, prefixes and suffixes. Roman life and culture are introduced in the Latin readings.
